The research aim is to carry out ethno geographic analysis of the population of Zaporizhzhia region, to determine both the peculiarities of the settlement of ethnic groups and the occurrence of ethnic processes in the region in the past and at the pre-sent stage. Research methods. The theoretical and methodological basis of the work is the comprehensive use of the scientific prin-ciple and the system-structural approach, which stipulated the choice of the following research methods: analysis and generaliza-tion of literary sources on the subject of research, historical, statistical, comparative, modeling, cartographic. Scientific novelty. Based on the set theoretical and practical objectives: - the comprehensive analysis of the historical and current ethno geographic processes in the territory of Zaporizhzhia re-gion has been performed; - the areas of ethnic settlement in the region and their structure have been revealed; - the structural-logical model of the intercultural potential of a polyethnic city has been developed; - the influence of intercultural potential and prospects of its use in Melitopol has been determined. The practical value of the work. The materials of the conducted researches can be used in further geographic, historical and cul-tural studies of Zaporizhzhia region in comprehensive secondary schools; in the teaching of the courses "Regional Studies", "Ge-ography of Zaporizhzhia Region", "Social Geography of Ukraine" at the Faculty of Natural History and Geography of Bohdan Khmelnitsky Melitopol State Pedagogical University; in popularization of the ethno geographic knowledge among the population and so forth. The proposed model of the intercultural potential of the city can be used for the similar research of other settlements.
