The purpose of the work is to create a conceptual model of the evolution of regional identities of the population of the South and East of Ukraine from the completion of the formation of administrative outlines of the region in the middle of the twentieth century to the modern Russian-Ukrainian war. Methods of research - "total history" (deep integration of historical tools with the development of psychology, social philosophy, political science, cultural studies); сomparative-historical, retrospective, diachronic and synchronous methods, tools of oral history. The role of Soviet ideology in shaping the public consciousness of the inhabitants of the southern and eastern regions of the Ukrainian SSR was revealed and described. It is substantiated that during 1945-1991, with the help of linguistic and cultural instruments, the construction of Soviet identity was carried out through the erosion of national consciousness. It has been proved that the presence of its own influential compatriots stimulated the development of territorial representations as opposed to national or civic identification. It is substantiated that the process of transit from "developed socialism" to a market economy was more difficult in the studied region than in other parts of Ukraine. As a result, in the public consciousness of local residents, the conservation of Soviet stereotypes took place. It was revealed that, on the background of the active development of the Ukrainian national project, after the independence of Ukraine, the remnants of Soviet representations integrated into local territorial identities. The influence of the events of the Revolution of Dignity on the regional representations is revealed through crystallization of the existing ideological positions and the consolidation of local pro-Ukrainian counterrelights.
