An aim of the work is the research of intellectual development of West European countries and Byzantium at the Ancient, Medieval and Early Modern time in following spheres: history of social and political thought, history of legal thought, history of religious (Ancient pagan and early Christian) ideas, history of geographical conceptions. Research was conducted with the help of intellectual history methodology. The special methods of source analysis were widely used. Research was conducted in few basic directions: development of religion and political ideas in Ancient Greece; ideological trends in early Christian thought and its opposition to the late Ancient paganism; Byzantine historiography and social thought in Х-ХІІ centuries, intellectual interactions of Byzantium and other European countries in these spheres; intellectual history of Western Europe in the Middle ages; intellectual history of Western Europe of early modern time; historiography. Three collections of scientific works of the department ("Libra") were published within the framework of the scientific theme. Research materials are used in the educational process - general and special courses on history of the Ancient world and Middle ages. Two manuals were published. Three candidate dissertations were prepared. Forecast suppositions about development of research: it is reasonable to continue the investigation of the social-cultural patterns of the development of European civilization.
