It is shown that the conversion of the weakly magnetic hematite and goethite into highly magnetic magnetite occurred in the presence of carbohydrates, carbon monoxide and siderite. The influence of grain size on the conversion of natural hematite by reduction with carbon monoxide and carbohydrates was also studied. It was established that hematite with a particle size of 0.05-0.4 mm was completely transformed into magnetite by reduction for 40 minutes. It has been shown that the heating of siderite and the mixture of siderite and hematite leads to the formation of magnetite without any reductant. The synthesis of magnetite occurred due to the carbon monoxide formation during the thermal decomposition of siderite. In addition, the incubation of goethite and hematite in an aqueous solution of iron salts leads to their partial conversion into magnetite. The chemical and mineral composition and the magnetic characteristics of the samples before and after transformation were determined by methods of X-ray diffraction analysis, magnetometry, thermomagnetic analysis and scanning electron microscopy. The obtained results can be used in solving problems related to the production of iron ore concentrates from low-grade iron ores.
