By a special technique, the tests results of sub-sized specimens were calibrated and compared with the tests results of standard Charpy specimens. Based on the extended finite element method, a technique of express assessment of brittle fracture resistance has been developed with the possibility of varying the shape, size and location of a crack, which will effectively determine its critical size and the most dangerous place in a structural element. The efficiency of using this technique was shown by the example of numerical modeling of the reactor pressure vessel nozzle zone. Recommendations on the use of advanced experimental and computational techniques of metal embrittlement and strength assessment of reactor pressure vessels and elements of the first nuclear power circuit equipment to justify the life-time extension were developed.
