The purpose of the work is to study the key internal and external factors of the political and socio-economic development of the Syrian Republic, which led to the current Syrian crisis. The theoretical and methodological basis of the study consist of historical, comparative, structural-functional, system and content-analytical methods used in various combinations and proportions in accordance with specific research tasks and features of the general subject of research. The main attention is paid to the peculiarities of the historical development of the region as a whole and the Syrian Arab Republic, in particular. The author analyzes the cultural, ethnic, religious and other factors that influenced the socio-cultural processes of the Middle East. As a result of the study, new theoretical positions on the origins and nature of the main socio-cultural transformations in the region have been developed. Features of the historical and socio-cultural development of Syria from the ancient centuries to the twentieth century are considered. The transformation of political and socio-economic processes in Syria during the XX and the beginning of the XXI century was analyzed. The key internal and external factors of the emergence and deepening of the Syrian crisis are identified.
