Subject of research: magnetic flux gate method of testing of surface and sub-surface defects of axles of wheel pairs and its technical realization. The analysis of the current state of non-destructive testing on railway transport has been carried out; it has been established that in the practice of defectoscopy of wheel pairs axes during the period of their manufacture and repair it is promising to use a flux gate method for automation of the testing process. The mathematical models were developed and calculations of magnetic fields near the surface of the wheel axis were made, which allowed to calculate both defect fields and the field of scattering of the stepped axis surface. Based on the analysis of information parameters of the magnetic fields of scattering of surface and sub surface defects and fields induced by a stepped surface of a magnetized axis, the possibility of spatial and frequency selection of useful signals was substantiated. Theoretical calculations are confirmed by the results of experimental studies. On the basis of the results of the performed research the functional scheme of the system of diagnostics of axle wheelsets, based on the use of the flux gate method, was developed. Implementation of the developed diagnostic system will automate the process of quality testing of the axes during their manufacture and repair.
