The aim of investigations: the optimization of the military system of radiation safety based on modern radiological concepts, adapted to typical scenarios of radiation exposure in military practice. Methods and equipment: biophysical and technical modeling, physical dosimetry, tissue-equivalent phantom of human body, compound carbon-based materials of the radiation protection of military armored vehicles. Theoretical and practical results: the list of necessary actions is assembled for the modernization of the military system of radiation protection in Ukraine. The certain pathways are suggested for solving a number of tasks, including the revision of the terms and definitions in the area of military radiology and radiation safety, improvement of the methodology of the assessment of radiation damage and loss of combat effectiveness in military personnel, refinement of the clinical guidelines on the diagnosis and treatment of radiation syndromes caused by the mixed gamma-neutron irradiation, technical retooling of the physical military dosimetry, development of the protocols of the personificated corrections of the combined immune-regulatory disorders in radiation exposed military personnel, creation of the technical devices for reproduction of various spatial-temporal conditions of radiation beams or fields, testing of particular parts or entire systems of radiation protection of the personnel and armored vehicles, assessment and implementation of the reference levels of exposure for radiation, chemical and biological protection troops during their combat missions. Novelty: for the first time a new information-biophysical model for prognoses of radiation damage and combat effectiveness loss in military personnel was developed; experimental testing of target radioprotectors in particular military scenarios of irradiation were suggested along with the schemes of individualized correction of combined immune-regulatory disorders depending on the direction of the vertical radiation dose gradient; a phantom-instrumental model was assembled for testing physical protection means at different energetic and angle parameters of irradiation. For the first time the real shielding properties were measured for several samples of compound carbon-based materials of the radiation protection of military armored vehicles under exposure by sparsely and densely ionizing radiation. For the first time the methodology of establishing the reference radiation levels for military practice in Ukraine was suggested. The effectiveness of implementation: the optimization of the military system of radiation safety will allow saving the financial expenses on the technical trials of physical means of radiation protection.
