The purpose of the work is to assess the ecological state of the environment of technogenically overloaded territories of the western region of Ukraine. Research methods: cartographic, systematic, comparative-geological, ecological-geological analysis and evaluation, statistical, geochemical, modelling, GIS-technologies, processing and analysis of the obtained results. The character and intensity of influence on the environment of various types of economic activity is investigated. The ecological state of territories affected by the development of sulphuric, salt, oil and gas, coal deposits, and urbanized territories (on the example of the city of Lviv and Lviv garbage dump) has been studied. The rocks with specific (subsidence) engineering-geological properties are investigated, as well as the composition and physical and mechanical properties of rocks - coal-mining wastes for the purpose of finding possible directions of their economic use. The leading ecological problems of the geological environment of Western Ukraine are identified and evaluated. The measures for neutralization of environmental pollution sources in the zone of influence of mineral deposits exploited now or in the past have been proposed. The obtained results can be used as the basis for developing measures for stabilization and improvement of the ecological situation in the region. The results of the work provide a reliable assessment of the state of the environment of technogenically overloaded territories of the western region of Ukraine; they will contribute to increasing environmental safety, which will have a social impact. The economic effect may be the increase in the investment attractiveness of the territories and the number of jobs. Implementation is possible in the services of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine, in the organizations of the State Geological Survey of Ukraine, in the environmental services of the Lviv region and in the management of emergencies.
