The purpose of study is to classify and evaluate the possibilities and directions of modern shopping mall's integration into the urban environment based on the situation of Kharkiv. It is done with the goal of forming the environment that would be psychologically comfortable, socially integrated and situationally expedient. The methods of research are rooted in the placemaking approach that considers urban shopping mall as an integral part of urban environment, and also as a space for commercial and public activities of city's inhabitants that both influences their behaviour and is influenced by it. With that viewpoint in mind, the complex method based on an analysis and synthesis of historic material, existing theoretical theses and research is employed. As a result of research the methods of shopping mall's integration into urban environment were analysed, while taking into account the cultural component of sustainable development. The work denotes potential positive applications of this approach considering the world's shift of paradigm in regard to the shopping mall's design. Also the assessment and propositions are made about the possibilities and resources of said integration based on the regional situation of Kharkiv.
