The purpose of the study is to analyze the linguo-cognitive aspect of a symbol in the mythological discourse (based on Slavic and ancient Greek mythology), to establish a connection between two cultures based on a holistic analysis of the cognitive features of word symbols in mythological discourse. Research methods are characterized by the use of an integrated methodology, including the use of such methods: the method of continuous sampling for the selection of the actual research material; comparable method for establishing universal, special and specific features of word symbols; semantic-cognitive analysis to explain, clarify the meanings of words; descriptive method for the systematization and interpretation of symbols in languages; quantitative analysis to ensure the reliability of the results of the study. The scientific novelty of the research consists in comparing word-characters by their semasiological expression and cognitive perception, and that for the first time it contains a classification of word-symbols of Slavic and ancient Greek mythology, common and distinctive features between them are found, and the main trends in the evolutionary development of the Greek and Slavic peoples are identified. The relevance of this topic lies in the fact that the pagan worldview of the ancient Greeks and Slavs, embodied in the mythological discourse, is the basis of the modern worldview of two nations and requires thorough study for further comparative analysis in order to establish a historical connection between two cultures or its refutation. In addition, the functional role of word-symbols in mythological discourse is not sufficiently investigated, which leads us to a deeper study of this topic, to try to classify word-symbols with their functions. The results of the comprehensive study can be used in the preparation of manuals for such disciplines as linguistic culturology, linguistic-stylistic analysis of the text, in teaching special courses on interlingual communication, in writing be students research works and master's research works etc. Also, the practical importance of the results of development is associated with the possibility of their use in Mariupol State University and in other higher educational and research institutions, where modern Greek is studied and taught as a specialty or discipline.
