The subject of the research - the problems of volunteer activity as a factor of social development and the direction of educational work in institutions of higher education. The purpose of the work is theoretical study of the problems of volunteer activity in educational institutions of higher education as part of the educational process and ways of their solution. The means of activating the volunteer movement in the conditions of the technical institution of higher education are investigated. Volunteering is analyzed as a factor in the development of civil society in Ukraine. The history of the formation of a student volunteer movement in modern Ukraine is researched. The industry of international volunteering is analyzed: from traditional practices to modern trends. The influence of training work on motivation of volunteer activity of students of the specialty "social work" is analyzed. Volunteer activity as a psychological resource of the personality of future social workers is explored. The advertising and information component of student volunteering is analyzed. Volunteering in the context of vocational guidance is explored. On the basis of the results of the research, the directions of educational work in the institution of higher education for the formation of a socially active personality through the involvement of students in the volunteer activity were developed. Implementation of the developed theoretical and practical provisions will be useful for teachers, social workers of the city services, organizers of educational work at a higher education institution.The results of scientific research of actual problems of volunteer activity are used in reading the disciplines "Political science", "Sociology", "Modern problems of society", "The theory of social work", "Social partnership", which are taught to students of specialties 231 - Social work, in dissertation researches and scientific publications. A dissertation for obtaining the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Associate Professor O. Maltseva is defended. A dissertation for obtaining the degree of a candidate of psychological sciences by a senior teacher M. D. Lapina is defended. The results of the research were reported at the International Scientific Conference at the University of Vytautas the Great (Kaunas, Lithuania), Lviv Pedagogical Community, at the International Scientific and Practical Conference "Pedagogy and the Psychology of Present: Theory and Practice" (Odessa, Ukraine). The results of the research were used in the works of students participating in the All-Ukrainian contest of student research papers.
