The purpose of the work is to study the ethno-social processes which took place in the south of Ukraine during the twentieth century. They led to the formation of regional peculiarities of the national groups of the region. The methodology research is based on the use of the following methods: comparative-historical, systematic and structural, retrospective and concrete analysis. Main directions of study are analysis of the influence of state ethnonational policy on the national groups of the South of Ukraine with the help of the achievements of national historical science and the active use of archival material. The work is divided into a problematic principle of the presentation of material about Ukrainians, major national minorities and other national minorities as three separate parts. But analyzing the position of each national group, the chronological order of the material is retained. The scientific research results are to generalize conclusions, regarding the impact of the state ethno-national policy on the formation of regional peculiarities of the national groups of the region in the period under study. The main characteristic of this influence is the volatility of the state ethno-national policy, its fluctuations in connection with the needs of the authorities. The study of the influence of state ethnic and national policy on the national groups of the region, as part of the preliminary stage of the development of ethno-national features of Ukraine, helps to understand the problems of the present.
