The Orientalist paradigm is based on Enlightenment rationalism, universalism and progressivism, and its key tenet is the thesis of the ontological and epistemological difference between East and West (E. Said). "Orientalism" was preceded by a "receptive-polemical" phase of comprehension of Eastern intellectual traditions in the Middle Ages and an early modern period characterized by the works of translators and ecclesiastical polemicists. This period is closely related to "practical orientalism", first of all, related to the activities of missionaries, diplomats, military, travelers, merchants. In its turn, academic orientalism, which began to take shape in the seventeenth century, is associated with translations and critical publications and interpretation of texts, reconstruction and rethinking of Eastern philosophical concepts. We also turned to the analysis of "Theosophical Orientalism", which proceeded from essentialist interpretations of Eastern religious traditions, emphasizing the differences between their exoteric and esoteric aspects, from which the intrinsic unity of different traditions emerges. We characterize Theosophical Orientalism as the "inverted form" of classical Orientalism. All of these approaches closely intersect each other and are differently represented in the study of individual religious and philosophical traditions of the East. The result of the study was the historical-philosophical reconstruction and critical assessment of the "Orientalist paradigm" in the context of the study of Eastern philosophies.
