First of all, the objects of different categories of material culture were thoroughly analyzed - ochre, painted ochre artifacts, engraved and perforated objects of personal ornaments, objects with "marks" dated to the chronological period between 130,000 and 25,000 years ago. A special aspect is the study of possible evidence of symbolic activity belonging to the Lower Paleolithic and dating back some 400,000-800,000 years. In the materials of different paleolithic sites on the territory of Ukraine new objects of reliably non-utilitarian purpose have been revealed. The indications of utilitarian use of dyes have been found out. A pilot version of the database covering colorants, exotic objects from Neanderthal sites (exel databases, photo document folders, geochronological and archaeological facts) has been created. Work has started on the creation of a lithotheque of natural pigments. In cooperation with French colleagues, some of the findings have been processed, in particular ozokerite (macro studies, age determination, chemical composition).
