Kholodny Institute of Botany NASU popup.description2 Research on topic was carried out as part of Consortium for the Barcode of Life - CBOL initiative for DNA-based identification, stocktaking and cataloging of species. CBOL is implementing a multilateral project, the International Barcode (iBOL), the world's largest biodiversity genomics program. According to the results of the project, 2200 samples cereals for DNA barcoding from the territory of Ukraine were processed for the first time. To solve the problems of identification of grasses, a protocol was developed to isolate four new DNA barcodes: matK, rbcL, rpl32-trnL and ITS, their discriminatory capabilities was tested and their potential for species-level identification was estimated. The ITS barcode has been found to have a discriminatory power of 96%, three times more than traditional rpl32-trnL, 33 times more than matK and 14 times better than rbcL. The results obtained as well as the whole work on creation of DNA-barcode database are actual on a global scale, their data are necessary for accurate identification of living species incl. invasive and other harmful plants for use in expertise, environmental work, taxonomy, environmental monitoring and training. The development of the NAS of Ukraine project is an integral part of the international project and the related DNA database of iBOL barcodes, and also is an element of the method of molecular genetic studies in the branch of grasses.
