Study purpose: to develop theoretical principles of spring barley breeding, to create new varieties and submit them to the state variety trials. Methods: hybridization, variety trials, selection, genetic and statistical analyses. Results and their novelty: in 2016-2018, at all stages of the breeding process, 52,613 accessions were studied, including 23,950 in 2018. 10,767 accessions were selected for further studies, including 2,542 in 2018. 921 new crossing combinations were created, including 232 in 2018. In 2016-2018, in seed nurseries, 10,276 accessions were studied, and 9,495 accessions were selected. In 2018, 2,749 were studied, and 2,405 were selected. 15 original spring barley lines with high antioxidant activity were transferred to the NCPGRU, 6 of which are carriers of the gene nud and 9 are carriers of the gene wax. Sources of qualitative properties of barley grain were identified: with high protein digestibility by proteolytic enzymes Parnas, Omskiy Golozyornyy 1, Berkut; with modified starch composition (waxy) CDC Alamo, Mebere, Shdevr, Amil; with high antioxidant activity CDC Alamo; with high content of phenolic compounds CDC Alamo, Amіl, Vzitets; with high oil content Shedevr; with high content of ω-3 polyunsaturated linolenic acid Lider, Krasen, Vzirets; with high ash and fiber contents Berkut, line 13-301, Shedevr. In 2016-2018, according to the plan, 3 spring barley varieties (Stymul, Krasen, Obrіi) and, in excess of the plan, 6 varieties (Kontrast, Shedevr, Lider, Amіl, Berkut, Styl) were submitted to the state variety trialse. 6 varieties are being tested. As of 2018, 14 spring barley varieties bred in the PPI nd.a. VYa Yuriev NAAS, which is 9% of the total number, are in the state register. Effectiveness of implementation: Pre-basic and basic seeds were grown and sold to the amount of 1,670,2 thousand UAH; 580,9 thousand UAH was paid as royalties.
