Study Purpose – to improve technique for sunflower chemical sterility induction via evaluation of the effect of new gametocidal agents on pollen sterility and viability of female gamethophyte which is suitable for carrying out hybridization on fertile basis without mechanical emasculation. Gametocidal activity of nine chemicals newly synthesided in the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry and Petrochemistry of NAS of Ukraine was investigated. It was revealed that DGK-2, DGK-3 and DSK-10 had a high gametocidal activity even at the lowest dose – 1 ml/l. Other agents had no gametocidal activity. DSK-10 was appeared to be the most effective one at a dose of 5 ml/l. This treatment allowed us to achieve near-complete male sterility. However, a negative effect of gametocides on the female gametophyte enhanced with increase in their concentrations. Particularly, seed-set after gametocide treatment and free cross-pollination decreased from 90 % in the control (untreated inflorescences) to 17.0−45.0 % (up to 63.7 % in certain inflorescences) under the influence of DGK-2, DGK-3 and DSK-10 in variants with the greatest male sterility effect. The mean value of this parameter for gibberellic acid was 19.3 % and varied from 14.5 % to 36.7 %. A patent application for invention on “The mode of seed-set determination in sunflower” was prepared. The new technical decision makes it possible to avoid time- and labor-consuming procedures and will speed up fully-developed seed-set determination in sunflower inflorescences.
