Subject of the research is the experience of formation and operation of the Ukrainian armed units in the 20th – early 21st century. Key objective of the research is development of the modern military and political history of Ukraine of the new time through analyzing the experience of emergence and formation of the Ukrainian armed units, their participation in the armed liberation struggle for national independence, analyzing the activity of the Ukrainian headquarters, officer corps, Ukrainian and global military doctrines, similar experience of other nations, strategies of battlefield practices; proposal of system recommendations for the political leadership and military command of Ukraine for creating the efficient national army able to resist the aggressor in terms of the hybrid warfare, using various forms of modern information, psychological, and armed struggle. Result of implementation The second stage of work sheds light on the Armed Forces of Ukraine formation processes in the newly-formed state based on the Soviet Army Unit. The processes of establishment, transformation, and development of the Ukrainian National Armed Forces were analyzed in comparison with those of other countries. Special attention was paid to the least researched parts of the Ukrainian military history, namely the formation of the UPR and WUPR armed units, Air Forces of Ukraine. The experience of the so-called “hybrid warfare” was also analyzed; other research directions of this problem were studied. Novelty of the research This is the first comprehensive case study of the 20th-century military and political history of Ukraine in the Ukrainian historiography, analysis of key military events in the territory of Ukraine, their progress, specifics, and impact on the struggle for the independence of Ukraine.
