For systems with moving parts, a transition mode is important at the beginning of their switching-on, as there is often a transition between adhesion and sliding modes. In nanoscale mechanisms, the properties of such a transition can critically affect the stationary mode of operation. The problem of breaking adhesive contact between an indenter with an axially symmetrical profile and an elastic half-space is considered in the paper. It is assumed that the friction force defined by Coulomb's law operates in the area where the adhesive contact has broken. Adhesion is described within the JKR theory. All possible behavior scenarios have been investigated and the parameters under which the transition between adhesion and the sliding mode is smoother is indicated. The study was performed with dimensionless parameters, which allows calculations for a wide range of different systems. Also the case where the contacting parts are made of functionally gradient materials is considered. Product Description popup.authors Borysyuk Vadym M. Zaskoka Anton M. Liashenko Zinaida M.
