The results of atmospherics’ measurements and analysis in the extremely low and very low frequency ranges (ELF and VLF) are described in the study. The purpose of the work is to analyze the data of observations of electromagnetic radiation in the ELF and VLF ranges obtained at the Ukrainian Antarctic Station (UAS) "Akademik Vernadsky" and to develop the equipment for monitoring the parameters of the lower ionosphere and for the location of powerful lightning discharges in the southern hemisphere. Methods of investigation - single-position methods of location of lightning discharges by the results of registration of horizontal magnetic and vertical electric components of the field of ELF and VLF atmospheres. Results and Novelty - Lightning discharges are reported to be recorded at distances of 2,000 km to approximately 9,000 km within the azimuthal sector, covering almost the entire continent of South America, southern Africa and the Gulf of Guinea. In addition to the basic type of normal waveguide waves, in the so-called “tweeks-atmospherics”, the second order and, sometimes, the third order normal waves were also observed. This allows us estimating the height of the lower boundary and the electron density in the lower ionosphere at night. The advantages of synchronous recordings of VLF atmospherics and Q-bursts were demonstrated, which made it possible to determine lightning ranges, peak current moments, charge moment changes and duration of lightning currents. A model of the VLF complex for monitoring measurements at the UAS was created. Conclusions. Experimental studies have shown the prospect of further combined ELF-VLF monitoring at UAS, which will allow to determine the parameters of powerful discharges and changes in the lower ionosphere associated with various phenomena of space weather, atmospheric and terrestrial origin.
