Kukhar Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry and Petrochemistry of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine popup.description2 Effective synthesis, screening and application of brassinosteroids as new biologically active substances is based on investigations of molecular mechanisms of their action on plant cell metabolism. It was found that exogenous ketosteroids e.g. 24-epicastasterone affects metabolism ob brassinosteroids in cells and elevate the level of endogenous brassinosteroids in soybean. 24-epicastasterone reduces the level of abscisic acid in the plant tissues removing its inhibitory effect on metabolism and thus activating plant growth responses. On the other hand, 24-epicastasterone induces auxin accumulation in plant cells leading to increased biological productivity. Elevation of phosphatidic acid level in vivo and pathways of its biosynthesis were elucidated during the response to ketosteroid hormones in plants. Alternative oxidase in leaves of investigated plants was shown to be sensitive to lower concentrations of 24-epicastasterone in comparison to root tissues.
