The purpose of the work is to create a system of research operations on classifying, sorting and evaluation of rough diamonds (RD) to monitor its quality and supervise the movement across the customs border of Ukraine. Research methods - literary and analytical. Results of work: It is shown that all the world's major diamond sorting organizations (RD) use the commercial classification of the international corporation De Beers as a basis that is simplified and modified in accordance with their own needs. The RD sorting scheme, which was developed by the State Gemological Centre of Ukraine (SGCU) for customs purposes (rapid diamond assessment), combines the methodological approaches of De Beers, a well-known South African firm ADTEC and the main gemological institutes of the European Union (IGI, HRD, Belgium) with reference to color assessment medodics and the purity of diamonds according to the Technical conditions of the SGCU. It is also shown that the classification of RD according to the Classifier of diamonds K 47-01-92 remains relevant when evaluating diamonds for commercial purposes. As a result of the work, Methodological instructions were created on the classification and sorting of natural rough diamonds and the maintenance of a database of diamonds. A virtual atlas of diamond crystals (reference samples) was also created for the classification of RD. Scope - diamonds gemological examination for customs and commercial purposes. Methodical instructions are planned for implementation at the SGCU.
