The purpose of the work is to investigate the operational characteristics of decorative stones of magmatic, metamorphic and sedimentary origin and to create a method for determining the predicted durability and service life of natural decorative stones. Research methods - analysis of standards, technical conditions, literature, field and laboratory (water absorption, open porosity, optical microscopy, sclerometric determination of surface strength, reaction with acids and alkalis) research. The data on the operational characteristics of decorative stones, in particular the mineral composition and petrographic structural and textural features, the value of water absorption and the open porosity of decorative stones of sedimentary, metamorphic and magmatic origin, have been obtained. Laboratory studies were carried out and the obtained data on the interaction of decorative stone (limestone, marble, labradorite, etc.) with acids of different origin (citric, acetic, 10% nitric, etc.) and the effects of these interactions for the operational use of decorative stone facing interior or exterior. The results of the research work are published in the interim report on the research work. The results of the work performed will be used in the State Gemological Center of Ukraine (hereinafter referred to as SGCU) to conduct expert studies of decorative stone in order to establish predicted durability and terms of their operation, as well as to provide advice and clarification to government authorities, operators in the market of decorative stones, specialized organizations , individuals and the like.
