The use of microalgae for the assessment of surface water bodies' quality in Ukraine is reflected in the light of the European experience, and revieled how the results of biotesting establish environmental quality standards for water and sediments using appropriate safety factors. It has been found that the test for algae, bacteria and protozoa according to existing standards can be considered as a short-term test, and in order to obtain chronic toxicity results, the duration of exposure should be increased. The results of the project were used to determine the reference values of biological indicators and the typical specific physicochemical conditions required to establish the ecological status of surface water masses and to organize a state monitoring system in the Siverskyi Donets River Basin (Don River Basin District).The proposals presented in submissions will be used in preparing solutions in the field of water management and land reclamation hydraulic engineering, management, use and reproduction of surface water resources. A seminar was held for water professionals. The obtained results were announced at conferences, and the information is displayed on the website of the Institute of Hydrobiology of the NAS of Ukraine.
