In the course of the work, classification of ecosystems of transboundary rivers of Ukraine, determination of descriptors for assessment of their ecological status (potential), development and testing of assessment methods at typical sites of selected surface water massifs were carried out. For each river basin, the main directions of climatic changes in the structural indices of aquatic ecosystems were identified, which were taken into account when selecting the reference values of the descriptors of the assessment of the ecological (status) potential. The validation of the established assessment methodology in different waters of transboundary basins showed that most surface water massifs were characterized by a "good" ecological status. The composition and structure of the biotic communities of the upper sections of the rivers, provided that there is minimal anthropogenic interference, do not differ from the reference values. The ecological status of surface water massifs is worsening with the increase of the river bed transformation and the flow of untreated domestic and industrial effluents and pollutants into the intake area.
