Subject of study - nitrogen compounds eutrophication and transformation processes in the ecosystems of the studied area. Aim of work: integrated study and determination of nitrogen load sources and role in eutrophication of the Dniester deltaic part and adjacent Black Sea area ecosystem. EU Directives have been analysed in view of their use in the nitrogen pollution problem resolving and pressure on aquatic ecosystems assessment. Overview of studies of nitrogen load on European water bodies performed during the past decade has been given. The main indicators of eutrophication processes intensity have been identified according to methodology of the EU Directives. Based on results of three specialized integrated annual surveys in the Dniester Delta, as well as monthly observations of hydrological, hydrochemical, hydrobiological parameters and atmospheric depositions carried out on three monitoring stations on the Dniester and Turunchuk Rivers, the study of eutrophication processes has been performed; nitrogen compounds' fluxes into aquatic ecosystem of the Dniester Estuary and their flow into the Black Sea has been assessed. The developed programme and the results of field experiment to study processes of nitrogen compounds accumulation in bottom sediments have been described; secondary pollution of the Dniester Estuary estimated. DPSIR matrix of nitrogen load impacts and effects has been developed; scheme of biogeochemical cycle and balance of nitrogen in the Dniester Delta and the Dniester Estuary have been theoretically substantiated. Based on that and the experimental data a realistic nitrogen compounds load on the ecosystem of the Dniester deltaic part as the result of river flow, atmospheric runoff and agro-industrial activities in the Lower Dniester basin has been estimated.
