The results of kinetic studies and quantum-chemical calculation of the thermochemistry of the individual elementary oxidation reactions, as well as the analysis of the kinetic scheme of the oxidation of alcohol in the presence of NHPI confirm importance of hydroperoxyl radicals in the oxidation of systems where alcohol is one of the components. The involvement of these radicals significantly affects the efficiency of catalysis by hydroxyphthalimides. The inhibitory action of NHPI in the radical-chain oxidation process by molecular oxygen has been experimentally and theoretically substantiated. The effect of NHPI in systems where hydrogen peroxide is oxidized has been investigated. The fact of accelerating the oxidation of the organic substrate with hydrogen peroxide when NHPI was added to the Raff system and the process slowing down when NHPI was added to the Fenton system were experimentally established.
