The purpose of the work is to improve the current theoretical foundations to obtain more reliable estimates of the operability of the responsible elements of the equipment to reduce the risks of technical solutions for the continuation of operation, and to modernize thermal and nuclear power plants. Research methods - mathematical modeling of processes limiting the operability of the responsible elements of the equipment of thermal and nuclear power plants on the basis of differential equations with initial and boundary conditions, the method of lines (semi-discretisation), the Merson's method. The mathematical models of non-stationary thermal conductivity of the steam boiler drum in certain operating modes are proposed. The temperature state of ceramic nuclear fuel in cylindrical fuel rods of a nuclear reactor is obtained on the basis of the proposed mathematical model of thermal conductivity. It is shown the efficiency of the Merson's method due to the automatic choice of the integration step for the study of self-ignition of dust-air mixtures and the problems of creep theory with moving boundaries. Based on the proposed mathematical model, it is shown that thin protective coatings contribute to a significant improvement in the operability of cladding of nuclear reactor's fuel rods by reducing the intensity of stresses and increasing the first natural oscillation frequency.
