In accordance with the provisions of Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC, the assessment of the environmental effects of chemical pollution of surface water must be carried out on the basis of the complexity principle, which consists in the simultaneous use of chemical and biological indicators of water quality. For this reason, it is recommended to use the method of calculating the water pollution factor for the assessment of water quality and ecological status of surface waters, which define the multiplicity of exceedance of the MPC or water quality standards of the relevant chemicals presented in Directive 2008/105/EC. To assess the effect of the combined action of the chemicals present in the water, taking into account the various manifestations of their interaction, it is recommended to use the aquatic ecosystem impact factor, which reflects the degree of disruption of the aquatic ecosystem and is calculated on the basis of the chronic toxicity levels of the water, as determined by bioassay using the "basic set of taxa" - algae, crustaceans and fish (article 1.2.6 of Annex V of WFD 2000/60/EC). Thus, the algorithm of assessment of ecological consequences of chemical pollution of surface waters is approximated to European legislation in the field of water policy. The effectiveness of its functioning is confirmed by the results obtained in the framework of the implementation of national and international programs by the results of a comprehensive water quality assessment of water bodies located on the territory of different river basins of Ukraine.
