Aims and field of the project: the aim of the project is to describe the main triggers of the Chinese sleeper expansion in Eastern Europe. To realize the project the molecular studies of the Chinese sleeper, as well as hydrobiological (the role of benthos in its diet) and parasitological studies will be provided. To discover the ecological interactions the studies of diet and parasites will be provided for the local herpetofauna. We studied the populations of the Chinese sleeper (Perccottus glenii), an invasive species in Ukraine and Latvia, as well as its role in the invaded ecosystems. In the Latvian bodies of water, this fish is able to replace the local ichthyofauna, making so-called “Chinese sleeper water bodies”. The lower feeding activity of this fish in Ukraine, comparing to Latvia, was registered. The larvae of mayflies can be considered as the most important dietary item of the Chinese sleeper, both in Latvia and Ukraine. The significantly lower parasite fauna is registered in Latvia, which is support for the «enemy release hypothesis». In Ukraine, the Chinese sleeper in included into the life cycles of parasites of amphibians and reptiles, which was not registered in Latvia. There are three haplotypes of cytochrome b are registered in Europe. Our molecular data confirm the existence of the «Carpathian population», which inhabits the basins of Dniester, Danube, Dnieper, Vistula and Southern Bug. Another, «Baltic population», which is registered in Latvia, possible originated from the first introduction of the Chinese sleeper to St.-Petersburg in 1914.
