The purpose of the study is ecotoxicological assessment of the impact of hydroelectric power plants in the Dniester basin. A sensitive and low-cost method for determining the zinc content in biological samples has been developed which has no analogues in ecotoxicology. It was verified the optimal set of biomarkers of bivalves and cyprinids and the tolerance range of ectotherms on the effects of elevated temperature and common pollutants separately and with combined action in a laboratory experiment. A standardized method for analyzing the state of freshwater ecosystems using the integrated biomarker index (IBR) was proposed, based on the calculation of more than 10 individual parameters. In addition, a method for early prediction of an aquatic ecosystem health based on analysis of the readiness of the aquatic organism to stress reaction has been developed. It was found that:1)biomarkers of bivalve mollusks clearly and differentially reflect the distinct habitat condition between hydropower plants with different technological regimes and within one hydropower plant;2)according to the variety of arguments, it is recommended to use bivalve mollusks as bioindicators rather than fish; 3)in a laboratory experiment, the common reactions to complex pollution in a field and model conditions were proved; 4)recommendations were made to security and supervisory government authorities and the long-term plans for cooperation were agreed, the results of the research were implemented into the schoolchildren’s innovative activity and their technological startups were supported in the structure of the Minor Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
