The aim of the work is to establish the basic laws of formation of the composition and structure of nanocomposite coatings with predicted functional properties, to develop technological recommendations for the practical application of these coatings, to study the processes of reactive ion-plasma synthesis of nanocomposite structures and to develop technologies for the synthesis of functional coatings for the needs of mechanical engineering. Investigations include several experimental methods, namely: X-ray analysis (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS), nanoindentation and investigation of tribological properties of coatings by Pin-on-disk method. The main result is the determination and measurement of the components of the total energy of magnetron sputtering and their effect on the formation of nanostructure, and, accordingly, the physical and mechanical properties of the films being synthesized. The scientific novelty is to study the influence of energy factors of magnetron sputtering on the formation of nanostructures, and, accordingly, the physical and mechanical properties of films. The obtained scientific results have been put into production at PJSC "Novokramatorsk Machine-Building Plant" (Kramatorsk, Ukraine) in the form of the following recommendations regarding the method of surface preparation of the tool; technologies for applying a wear-resistant transition metals nitride, carbide and boride coatings to a cutting tool; the choice of optimal system parameters and cutting modes by the criterion of maximum productivity, while minimizing the time and energy consumption of the technological process.
