(with 2 appendices), illustrated with 80 figures and 30 tables. The total list of links contains 451 references. This paper presents the results of studies of the state of rare and vulnerable wetland avian species included in Annex I of the EU Birds Directive as well as proposals for their protection, the spread of 14 amphibian and 19 reptile species in the Steppe zone (11059 cadastral points), state of 7 fish and lamprey species from the Red Book of Ukraine (2009), 8 species from Resolution 6 of the Berne Convention Settlement Directive and 5 introduced species in the small and medium rivers of the Middle Dnieper area, species composition and population status of small mammals on key nature conservation territories of Western Polissya (Pripyat river’s basin); the example of ornithocomplexes’ allocation and the distribution of key wetland avian species illustrates the processes of buffer redistribution of nesting species between parts of the small steppe rivers’ basins of Pryazovia. GIS-analysis identified 20 key sites important for amphibian and reptile conservation. New territories important for the conservation of rare amphibian and reptile species have been identified. The leading role of dammed areas of small rivers in the conservation of habitats important for near-water and wetland avian species, including the rare ones listed in the Red Book of Ukraine, has been established. Recommendations for the conservation of rare species have been developed and it was proposed to appoint major refugium lakes on small rivers as wetlands of regional importance.
