Sewage sludge is a problem that must be addressed by following conditions: reducing negative impact on environment and economic viability. Use of ERUs as energy raw materials in such utilization technologies as pyrolysis, hydropyrolysis, combined fermentation and gasification processes, polygeneration, steam conversion, gasification of mixtures with other fuels, thermocatalytic reforming, three-step gasification; can meet these conditions, but most of these technologies are not yet used in industry. Energy potential of fresh sludge in Ukraine is estimated at 450,000 tonnes of conventional fuel per year. Its use for production of electric and thermal energy and secondary liquid and solid fuels is appropriate as one that is consistent with the global trend of decentralized energy. Cost-effective, acceptable for Ukrainian conditions of sludge disposal technology is their co-incineration with other solid fuels and waste in boilers of TPPs, CHPs and cement kilns. For decentralized energy facilities, preference should be given to the processes of gasification or pyrolysis of ERUs with the subsequent generation of electricity.
