Aim: establishment the influence of various conditions of activation of red sludge of aluminium production on the targeted regulation of physical and chemical properties of the obtained materials for the needs of natural and waste water treatment. Methods: sorption and coagulation processes when using solid and liquid products of red sludge treatment. The main results: on the basis of the analysis of modern literary data on red sludge processing, promising directions of research on the production of coagulants and sorbents have been determined. Technological conditions of obtaining liquid composite coagulants by activation of sludge with hydrochloric and sulfuric acids are investigated. Efficiency of effect of obtained composite coagulants in processes of purification of natural waters with high content of organic substances is determined and conditions of their effective use depending on Al2O3/Fe2O3 ratio are revealed. Samples of sorbents are obtained from solid residue of acid activation of sludge under different conditions of their production. It has been found that samples of red sludge solid residue after activation have low sorption capacity to nickel (II) ions, methyl orange, phosphate and nitrate ions, 2-chlorophenol, Triton Х-100 and high adsorption capacity to iron (III) ions. Sorbent samples obtained by precipitation with ammonia from an acidic solution of red sludge neutralization have high sorption capacity to phosphate ions and iron (III) ions.
