The purpose of the work is to analyze and substantiate the relationships between the ecological status of aquatic ecosystems of selected water bodies, the rational use of water resources and water conservation measures. Research methods - analysis and systematization of scientific, theoretical and practical data on quantitative and qualitative aspects of water use in the basins of selected water bodies. The peculiarities and effectiveness of the modern model of water use in representative areas of the Dnieper and Dniester basins are analyzed. The technogenic and natural elements of hydro-ecosystems were studied and the relationships between them were evaluated. Quantitative characteristics of hydro-ecological potential of natural-technogenic hydro-ecosystems in the context of seasons and periods of different water content are determined. The qualitative characteristics of the hydro-ecological potential of natural-technogenic hydro-ecosystems were evaluated. The influence of hydrometeorological phenomena on the conditions of water use on the representative section of the Dnieper basin at the current level of technogenic loading is considered. The proposals for water protection measures at representative sites of the Dnieper and Dniester basins for decision-making on prevention or localization of pollution of water sources are substantiated.
