M. Vysotsky popup.description2 Study object: forest stands in different climatic and natural zones in the flatland part of Ukraine. Aim of the study: to improve the methods and technologies of felling in the flatland forests of Ukraine that will facilitate the sustainable development of forestry and improve the qualitative and quantitative structure of forest biocoenoses. Methodology of the study: the method of comparative ecology with the usage of forestry, geobotanical, ecological, and phytocoenotic methodical approaches, as well as some of the forest mensuration methodical approaches which perfectly complement each other. It was found that the forest fund structure is unbalanced, with middle-aged stands prevailing and with a very significant part of maturing, mature and over-mature stands. Special aspects of the functioning of forests with different species composition, as well as peculiarities of the dynamics of their forming and regeneration were studied. The results of the research conducted in different natural zones of Ukraine on a range of stationary research objects concerning final felling and forming and sanitation forest felling were analyzed. New results of the study concerning how catchment areas influence the tendencies in forest distribution and its typological structure were obtained. The actual forest cover percent was calculated for the catchment areas of the Vorskla, Psel, Sula and Siversky Donets rivers as well as their tributaries within the Left-Bank Forest-Steppe. Economic valuation of the timber stock volume for mature forest stands of main forest forming species was done according to their actual and proposed maturity ages. The guidelines, which were worked out based on the research results, should be implemented in the forest enterprises in the flatland part of Ukraine. Obtained results can be taken into account in such documents as the National Forest Policy of Ukraine, the Strategy of the Development of Forestry.
