Kavetsky Institute of Experimental Pathology, Oncology and Radiobiology National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine popup.description2  Object of research: the course of the middle degree acute radiation sickness (ARS) in rats under the action of carbon enterosorbents; the micro/nanoparticles that flushed from the surface of carbon hemosorbents. Aim of research: the influence of enterosorption with activated carbon on basic hematological and biochemical indices, and on induction of radiogenic tumors in irradiated rats; morphometric characterization of micro/nanoparticles that flushed from the surface of carbon hemosorbents. Methods of research: biochemical, biophysical, morphological, cultural, hematological, physical-chemical, optical and electron microscopy, processing and analysis of obtained results. Carbon enterosorbent 1 (ES1, type HSGD) with bulk density of 0,2 g/cm3, diameter of granules of < 0.25 mm and surface area (S BET) of 2200 m2/g was incapable of recovering leucocyte and lymphocyte contents in blood of irradiated rats. The effect of ES1 on the bone marrow and its cellular compartments in irradiated cells was insignificant as well. Under the influence of ES1 the level of superoxide radicals decreased significantly in brain, liver and heart of irradiated rats, however, this level did not reach that of the intact control. These processes were accompanied by increased antioxidant activity in blood according to the pro/antioxidant parameters. The preliminary data show that ES1 may inhibit the formation of radiogenic solid tumors. Carbon hemosorbents that were prepared from various raw materials were assessed for the dust formation, characterizing shape and size of micro/nanoparticles that flushed from the surface of these hemosorbents.
