M. Vysotsky popup.description2 Object of research: forest pests and diseases. Aim of research: to improve the methods of survey, assessment, and prediction of forest pests and diseases considering their prevalence and harm on the main forest forming species. Methods of research: analysis of archive data, publications, and forest inventory database using statistical methods; evaluation of growth parameters and crown condition using forestry methods; defining insects population indices by means of entomological methods; analysis of radial increment of trees by means of dendrochronological methods. Peculiarities in forming of pest complexes in the main and codominant forest forming species were studied; stands’ health condition was evaluated. Prospective entomophage species that will serve as biological forest protection were determined. Special aspects of how adventive pests and diseases spread in the forests of Ukraine were found, namely emerald ash borer, oak lace bug, ash dieback causal agent. The pathogenicity of Hymenoscyphus fraxineus was proved through inoculating ash trees and identifying the pathogen by means of molecular methods. Pest species composition in the main and codominant forest forming species as well as the terms and criteria of the survey were specified. Rating of harmfulness for about 100 xylophagous species for pine and four deciduous tree species was evaluated. The role of xylophagous species in vectoring of birch bacteriosis was shown. Prediction of outbreaks of foliage browsing and stem pests using GIS methods was improved. An algorithm for monitoring trends in changes of birch stands health depending on trees’ age and their initial health condition is suggested. Area of application is forest protection.
