The purpose of the study is to substantiate the principles of development of military leadership in the context of reforming the Armed Forces of Ukraine and to develop proposals for its improvement in the practice of military management. Research methods. Methods of dialectics, system and comparative analysis were used in research work. The dialectical method used in its modern interpretation has provided consideration of the phenomenon of the leader as a whole in the system of his multifaceted connections, formation and development of specifically necessary individuations. The historical method made it possible to identify the origins and dynamics of the formation of military leadership both in the historical context and in today's conditions, to identify the determining factors of this phenomenon, the main contradictions of development. The system method ensured the identification of specifically necessary qualities of a military leader, which are formed in the process of socialization of the individual and socio-cultural integration. The comparative method allowed to compare domestic and European experience in the formation of leadership, to identify differences and analyze the prospects for its formation on a humanistic basis. The interdisciplinary approach was used as a method of complex analysis of facts, phenomena and processes. Research has shown that the phenomenon of leadership has been perhaps the most relevant topic in science for many decades. However, in the range of problems related to military service, this component is actually was not included. In the course of this study, the validity of the study of the phenomenon of military leadership in its relationship with the specifics of military service was proved.
