An overview of real carbon structures and some hypotheticals is given. Features of structure of graphite, diamond, turbostratic forms of carbon, graphene, nanotubes, fullerenes, onions, carbines are considered. The dependence of the material structure on the characteristics of the chemical bond between carbon atoms is demonstrated. In addition to the results of numerous studies taken from literary sources, the paper summarizes the results of studies of carbon structures that have been obtained by authors for more than half a century. At the same time, great attention was paid to the works that were devoted to the study of phase transformations in carbon, and also showed the specificity of the use of diffraction methods for the study of structure in the study of carbon.
