It has been found that the solvent is better used in the modification of bitumen (distillation and oxidized) than tar, due to the higher viscosity of bitumen. It is established that under the conditions of the process of modification of oil residues hydrocarbon solvents are able to interact with formaldehyde. The chemistry of the process of modification of bitumens and tars with maleic anhydride has been studied. It is shown that the modification process is due to the chemical interaction of petroleum residues with maleic anhydride by the addition reaction (Diels-Alder).
