Object of study: Taxa: bats, cetaceans, representatives of related taxa and functionally similar groups (outgroups). Structures: skeletal elements - skull, sublingual apparatus, spine, ribs, sternum, girdle of limbs and limbs, teeth; genes: 5’-terminal Hox genes. The purpose of the work - the overall goal of the project is to identify ways of integration and transformation, sources of evolutionary innovations of mammalian skeletal systems when changing adaptive zones - the transition to air and fully aquatic lifestyles. The project aims to study skeletal structures as the most conservative, which are convenient models for assessing evolutionary processes. Particular attention is paid to the processes associated with the continuation of ontogenesis on the example of groups with high variability in size and high life expectancy. The first stage of the project in 2020 involves the collection and initial processing of morphological data and genetic information from open sources, to determine methodological approaches for a comprehensive study of indicators of integration of skeletal systems and ways of their change during evolution. Research methods - traditional and geometric morphometry, construction of multidimensional morphological models: collection of primary data - photogrammetry, radiography, photography, measurement. Preparation of micromorphological preparations (including paleohistology), microscopy and computed tomography. Mathematical methods - factor analysis, phylogenetic analysis, graph analysis. Bioinformatics - creation of a pipeline for search and annotation of target sequences in open databases, establishment and prediction of nucleotide and protein sequences, data analysis.
