A comparison is made with polymer membranes, as a result of which it is determined that the use of ceramic membranes is safer for the environment and will contribute to the creation of sustainable water treatment technologies that can be completely closed. A promising direction in overcoming the main disadvantages of ceramic membranes is the creation of cheap and highly functional ceramic membranes using nanotechnology, modification of their surface against bio-formation for disinfection and creation of hybrid membranes. Additionally, a promising direction for the creation of ceramic membranes based on low-cost raw materials and the development of cheap anisotropic inorganic membranes are indicated. In general, it was noted that membrane technologies, while eliminating certain drawbacks, will be recognized as a universal and "green" method of wastewater treatment, which will allow solving a wide range of water treatment issues. Matrices of ceramic membranes have been synthesized from cheap materials and using industrial waste (red mud). The characterization of the feedstock for ceramic membranes was carried out by methods of X-ray phase and chemical analysis, the size and distribution of pores, and the specific surface area were determined. Formed matrices for ceramic membranes are qualitatively tested for mechanical properties. Powders for selective layers of ceramic membranes for micro-, ultra- and nanofiltration of sol-gel technology and hydrothermal synthesis have been obtained, and their characterization by X-ray phase and chemical analysis methods has been established, their structural-adsorption properties have been established, etc. The study of the transport properties of the synthesized membranes has begun.
