The key role of Ce3+-Vo-Ce3+ (or Ce3+-Vo-Re3+) complexes and Ce3+/Ce4+ ratio in formation of anti-/prooxidant activity of cerium oxide nanocrystals was shown. Sufficient improvement of antiradical activity was shown for mixed CeO2 - Re2O3 (Re = Y, Eu, Tb), CeO2-ZrO2, and pre-irradiated cerium oxide nanocrystals. Variation of pH of colloidal solutions allows controlling the type of redox-activity of cerium oxide nanocrystals, at low (<5,5) pH values prooxidant activity dominates over antioxidant one. UV pre-irradiated water solutions of GdYVO4:Eu3+ nanocrystals demonstrate effective oxidation of ascorbic acid and lipids by reactive oxygen species formed during interaction of water and oxygen molecules with defect-captured electrons and holes accumulated at irradiation of nanocrystals, while the same nanocrystals stored in the dark for several days show strong antioxidant activity.
