Methods for determining the volume of the root system of sainfoin at the initial stages of organogenesis of sainfoin and determining the adaptive potential of the integrated coefficient of the negative effect of drought on the degree of manifestation of a set of economically valuable traits have been developed. The technique of application of ecologically safe ways of increase of seed productivity of new grades and perspective lines of sainfoin in selection nurseries at summer terms of sowing by freshly collected seeds is developed. A variety of sainfoin with high potential of seed and fodder mass productivity for arid climatic conditions of the south-eastern region of Ukraine has been created and is being prepared for submission to state variety testing. In 2020, the yield of seeds and green mass was obtained - 0.86 t / ha and 29.40 t / ha, respectively, which exceeds these indicators on crops of the original population by 0.15 t / ha and 4.84 t / ha. The introduction of developed methods to improve seed productivity using the selection of breeding material by adaptive potential, expressed by the intensity of root system development in the initial stages of plant development in arid conditions of the eastern part of the northern steppe of Ukraine allows to obtain seed yield 0.195 t / ha or green mass 6.33 t / Ha.
