The aim of the study is to develop the scientific basis of nanostructured engineering of interlayer interaction in multi-period vacuum-arc composites to create a new type of superhard coatings. Research methods - vacuum-arc method (based on a modified installation "Bulat-6") to obtain nanoperiod multilayer composites with a layer thickness of 5… 15 nm and multilayer composites with a total thickness of 10… 14 ?m, their elemental analysis (X-ray fluorescence research) structural condition (basic will be X-ray structural, X-ray tensometric and electron microscopic methods), measurement of micro- and nanohardness, certification of adhesive strength of coatings and tribological tests. Main results: the use of X-ray diffractometric method as a basic method allowed to reveal the regularities of structural states in nanowire layers of single- and multilayer composite coatings of transition metal nitrides. For multilayer nanoperiod coatings depending on the magnitude of the mismatch between the periods of the lattices of the mating layers (which, when comparing one system of planes, corresponds to the difference between the interplanar distances), the conditions for the formation of the interface of layers of different types were established.
