The purpose of the study is to establish the circumstances of the origin and development of the nign – a type Hassidic music in Ukraine, determine its typological characteristics and musical connections (including types of musical modality and rhythm) between Hassidic music and the soundscape in which it developed in Ukrainian ethnic lands. The results of the first stage of work include the description and analysis of the source base of the study, namely: critical review and classification of published works on this topic; archival documents that characterize the historical and cultural space of Ukrainian-Jewish relations; previously unpublished phonographic materials of Hassidic nigunim and transcriptions. Based on the source analysis and interviews with the bearers of the Hassidic tradition, the concept of Hassidic music is determined, which implies unitywith Ashkenazi musical practices and the unique properties of this tradition. Constants and variables in the nign model are identified and analyzed. In the course of verifying the hypotheses of scholars on the synthesis of musical traditions of Hassidic and Ukrainian communities, for the first time in Ukrainian ethnomusicology a multifaceted comparative analysis of Ukrainian song compositions recorded in Right Bank Ukraine and Eastern Galicia and a representative example of a Hassidic nign is conducted; significant affinity of the studied compositions at the mode level was revealed. In addition, for the first time, the levels of interaction between Ukrainian and Jewish instrumental musicians in the regions of Eastern Galicia, which influenced the formation of Hassidic music, were determined.
