Long-term operation of structural steels in the energy sector causes degradation of their physical and mechanical properties, which are crucial in ensuring the reliability of these structures. The degradation process of such steels is accelerated by harsh operating conditions, namely, long-term interaction of stressed metal with corrosive-hydrogenating environments, cyclic pressure changes and temperature fluctuations. The most dangerous manifestation of operational degradation of steels is the worsening of their resistance to stress corrosion cracking, because the corrosion-mechanical fracture is often the main cause of accidents of responsible energy facilities. Thus, the express method of steel degradation in the energy sector has been developed, which combines preliminary electrolytic hydrogenation with subsequent plastic deformation of the specimens, which promotes the development of damage dissipated in the bulk of the metal, similar to operating conditions. The implementation of the method in the energy sector will allow scientific substantiating the choice of steels for the construction of new facilities taking into account their susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking in both the initial and operated states, which will reduce the risk of emergency failures. In addition, the use of the method for existing long-term operated energy facilities enables assessing the susceptibility of their steels to stress corrosion cracking taking into account their operational time and conditions, and, based on the data obtained, substantiating the terms and conditions of their further safe operation.
